It’s not every day an NFL organization trades away a generational superstar. But as we’ve learned on many occasions, the Oakland Raiders are not your average franchise. And the way Vegas sees it, it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that former Defensive Player of the Year Khalil Mack will be dealt before the trade deadline (the current odds are -500 for Mack being traded, +350 for no trade).
The latest odds on the Khalil Mack sweepstakes have shifted so much we had to throw out the old ones and bring you a fresh new take. So with that in mind, here’s a look the teams most likely to land the Pro Bowler in a trade in 2018.
Odds courtesy of MyBookie as of August 19, 2018.
Oakland Raiders (+350)
The Raiders aren’t stupid. They know how talented Mack is. In fact, while discussing how disappointed he was that the All-Pro wasn’t at camp, head coach Jon Gruden went so far as to refer to the defensive end as the team’s “best player,” per Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area. The Raiders don’t want to trade the Pro Bowler, and there’s still a chance they work things out and sign him to a long-term deal. However, under the current circumstances, it’s getting harder and harder to imagine that happening.
New York Jets (+350)
Outside of Leonard Williams, the New York Jets have no difference makers on their front seven. Adding a player of Mack’s caliber would change all that. Plus, as things stand, the Jets will have the most available cap space heading into the 2019 season. So it’s not as if they don’t have the means to sign him. There are worse ways to spend your money.
Chicago Bears (+300)
Can you imagine a monster like Mack in a Vic Fangio defense? Yeah, so can we, and it’s absolutely terrifying. The Bears are the biggest risers in the latest Khalil Mack sweepstakes. Considering the group of quarterbacks currently in the NFC North, it makes a team in that division would be interested in landing itself a generational talent. Speaking of which…
Green Bay Packers (+200)
That’s right, folks, the Green Bay Packers are the favorites to land Mack in a trade. Not only do they have the 2019 draft capital needed to make this sort of splash, they also recognize that the window for winning Super Bowls is particularly small. So when you have a quarterback of Aaron Rodgers‘ caliber, you should do everything you can to help him. In this case, that means trading for Mack and fielding a defense that scares the crap out of the opposition.
Other teams to watch:
- Buffalo Bills (+1000)
- Washington Redskins (+1500)
- Pittsburgh Steelers (+1500)
- New York Giants (+2000)
- Field (+600)
