After five weeks, the 2018 NFL season is starting to take shape. As expected, there has been a few surprises along the way.

Among the biggest surprises has been the play of the Pittsburgh Steelers (2-2-1), Philadelphia Eagles (2-3), and Green Bay Packers (2-2-1). All three teams entered the season with Super Bowl aspirations, and after Week 5, each of them have a lot of work to do just to qualify for postseason play.

On the flip side, the Chicago Bears (3-1), Cincinnati Bengals (4-1), and Kansas City Chiefs (5-0), have all been surprisingly good football teams in 2018.

So, who do the Vegas oddsmakers now like to win Super Bowl 53 next February? Here’s a look at the odds-on favorites heading into Week 6.

Odds courtesy of BetOnline as of October 9, 2018.

New Orleans Saints (+1000)

At 4-1, the Saints look like the biggest threat to the L.A. Rams in the NFC.

The New Orleans defense has managed to fix most of the defensive issues that led to their embarrassing 48-40 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1, and their offense, led by Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara, and Michael Thomas, has been an absolute juggernaut.

If this team can find a way to lock up home field advantage throughout the NFC Playoffs, they will have an excellent chance win their franchise’s second Super Bowl title.

New England Patriots (+700)

After a disastrous start, the Patriots appear to be back to being the Patriots.

With the emergence of rookie Sony Michel, and the continued strong play out of James White, the Pats now have a solid 1-2 punch at running back. Couple that with a receiving core (Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Rob Gronkowski) that will only get better as Josh Gordon becomes more comfortable in Josh McDaniels’ system, and you have the makings of a team that is fully capable of making the ninth Super Bowl appearance of the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era.

Kansas City Chiefs (+700)

The Chiefs have been arguably the biggest surprise of the 2018 season.

After five weeks, Kansas City has a perfect 5-0 record, and their quarterback, second-year pro Patrick Mahomes, is the odds-on favorite to win the 2018 NFL MVP award in his first full season as the team’s starter.

While their defense still leaves something to be desired, the Chiefs still look like the team to beat in a surprisingly wide open AFC.

Los Angeles Rams (+300)

Through five weeks, the Rams are unquestioned favorites to win Super Bowl 53 next February. Their defense, led by legendary defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, is loaded, and will only get better when All-Pro cornerback Aqib Talib returns from his ankle injury. And on offense, the Rams are borderline unstoppable.

Bottom line: it’s hard to envision a scenario where the Rams are not representing the NFC in Super Bowl 53 — barring any catastrophic injuries or unforeseen developments, of course.

  • Carolina Panthers (+2500)
