In the world of professional sports, the NFL is king when it comes to parity. Remember the age-old saying, “any team can win on any given Sunday in the NFL?”
As history has proven, that statement is not entirely true — every year there are at least a couple of teams that are not built to compete with the rest of the league. But at the end of the day, most NFL teams are more than capable of pulling off an unforeseen upset if they play their best brand of football. And when you factor in point spreads, upsets are an extremely common occurrence in the National Football League.
With that being said, here is a look at three potential upsets — against the spread (ATS) — in Week 1 of the 2018 NFL season.

Atlanta Falcons vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Point spread: Falcons +2.5
For us, this one came down to the Eagles’ quarterback situation. While we are fully aware that the Birds won a Super Bowl title with Nick Foles at the helm, we also aren’t convinced that his hot streak will carry over to an entirely new season.
The Falcons, on the other hand, are at full strength and added a few key pieces this offseason. We expect this game to be close throughout, with the Falcons having an excellent chance at notching an ATS win here.
Seattle Seahawks vs. Denver Broncos
Point spread: Seahawks +3
This projects to be a battle between two teams that are very much in limbo. Both teams are essentially in rebuilding mode, but they also both have All-Pro-caliber talent on their respective rosters.
The outcome of this game could very well be decided by each team’s quarterback play. If that proves to be the case, we’ll take Russell Wilson over Case Keenum.
This game could go either way, but we like Seattle’s chances at posting an ATS win in Week 1.
Cincinnati Bengals vs. Indianapolis Colts
Point spread: Bengals +3
This one all comes down to how well Andrew Luck plays after missing the entire 2017 season. If he plays like an All-Pro, the Colts may blow out the Bengals. If he proves to be a tad rusty, which is what we see happening, the Bengals are in a great position walk away with an ATS win here.
