Defense may win championships, but that isn’t what necessarily drives NFL fans. Today’s fans, as you might expect, are drawn to the excitement provided by the other side of the ball.
They want explosive plays from wide receivers. They want broken tackles and big gains from running backs. They want touchdown pass after touchdown pass from the sport’s top gunslingers. They want OFFENSE. And they want it any way they can get it — even if it comes by way of a rookie.
Expectations are sky high for the 2018 rookie class, and this holds especially true for players on the offensive side of the ball. As a result, Vegas oddsmakers have released their favorites to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Take a look and see who stands at the head of the class.
Josh Rosen, QB, Arizona Cardinals (+950)
UCLA star Josh Rosen was “pissed” that four quarterbacks were selected ahead of him in the 2018 draft. He made this emphatically clear after the Arizona Cardinals selected him 10th overall. If Rosen ends up seeing the field as a rookie this season, don’t be surprised if that gigantic chip on his shoulder propels him to the front of the class.
Sam Darnold, QB, New York Jets (+750)
Sam Darnold has been everything the New York Jets hoped he would be and more. While the former USC product has yet to really air the ball out, he’s already improved his throwing motion, is making quick decisions with the football, and has been impressive when the pocket breaks down around him. Darnold could very easily be the Jets starter come Week 1.
Baker Mayfield, QB, Cleveland Browns (+600)
Baker Mayfield may have been the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, but he’s actually No. 2 on the Browns’ quarterback depth chart behind offseason acquisition, Tyrod Taylor. This doesn’t bode well for the Heisman Trophy winner’s chances of playing as a rookie, as word on the street is Taylor’s been turning heads in Cleveland. Still, considering he was the top pick on draft day, it’s not surprising Mayfield is on the list.
Saquon Barkley, RB, New York Giants (+155)
The New York Giants could’ve opted for a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 draft, but instead went with arguably the best player in the entire class in Penn State’s Saquon Barkley. It’s hard to argue with the selection. Saquon has the chance to be a special, special player. Plus, have you seen his quads? The oddsmakers would be crazy to make him anything but the overwhelming favorite for Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Other notable players to watch:

- Rashaad Penny, RB, Seattle Seahawks (+1500)
- Lamar Jackson, QB, Baltimore Ravens (+1600)
- Sony Michel, RB, New England Patriots (+1800)
